FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Canadians Remember?
Canadians Remember is a grassroots viral campaign with a goal of raising 2.5 million dollars for restoration, education, and preservation of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp. Our goal is to educate the Canadian public on the value of this historic site and ask for just $1 from 2.5 million Canadians to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz.
Why should people donate?
The crimes of the Nazis during the Holocaust are widely acknowledged as some of the greatest atrocities ever committed against humankind. The lessons that Auschwitz can teach us by preserving tangible evidence of the extermination and its victims are sadly relevant to world events today. It’s not a Jewish question per se; it’s a human question. Many groups today and in recent history are facing similar prejudices and oppression. This could just as easily be about Cambodia, Serbia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Syria or the Ukraine. Donating just $1 demonstrates Canadians’ support of efforts to prevent oppression and prejudice and ensures that future generations can be witness to history.
How much of my donation will go to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation?
100% of every net dollar donated will go directly to the Foundation’s Perpetual Fund. Naturally, there are nominal expenses associated with operating the Campaign but our Advisory Committee and Project Coordinator work diligently to obtain donated resources wherever possible from our Partner relationships.

Will my donor information be kept confidential?
Yes. See our privacy statement here.
Can I get a tax receipt for my donation? Are you a charity?
We are a registered not-for-profit Ontario corporation (Incorporation #894412-1), and operate under the rules and regulations of that classification. We’ve also gone two steps further: we are audited by an independent accounting firm, and all donations are held in trust by an independent law firm. If people want to make larger donations, we will absolutely accept them, but we are not able to issue tax receipts for their support. We don’t want you to give more than $1 simply to get a tax break. We’d like you to give $1 because it’s the right thing to do, and then ask everybody you know to do the same. Our campaign strives to be 100% financially transparent and accountable. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
Where does my money go?
All donations are processed via PayPal, and are transferred into a secure account audited by Marcus and Associates Inc., London, Ontario. All funds are then held in trust by Brown Beattie O’Donovan LLP, London, Ontario. Funds are held securely in this account until the date of their donation, in 2015, directly to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation.
You can view all financial reports, including information on the distribution of funding, of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation here.
Why donate to this vs. directly to Auschwitz-Birkenau?
Our campaign provides the opportunity for Canadians to put forth a united effort. If we can donate 1 million euro or more, Canadians together will be recognized at Auschwitz as a ‘Pillar of Remembrance‘, with a permanent recognition installed at the site celebrating Canada’s efforts. Together, we can make a statement of our solidarity against oppression and prejudice, and put Canada on the map. We can put Canada’s contribution in the range of donations already made by Germany, the United States, France, Great Britain, and other countries. Except under exceptional circumstances, charities outside of Canada (such as the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation in Poland) are not legally able to issue tax receipts to Canadian individuals or organizations who donate to them. While tax receipts are not an option for donors, all Canadians who donate to Canadians Remember will receive international recognition for supporting a great initiative. The price of this is just $1 per person, from 2.5 million donors.
What if I don’t have PayPal?
If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can still participate using Visa or Mastercard.
What if I would rather write a cheque?
If you are more comfortable writing a cheque rather than donating online, we will certainly accept this type of donation. Please make out all cheques to ‘Canadians Remember’ and mail to 205 Horton Street East, London ON, N6B 1K7.
Aren’t there enough worthy causes to donate to here in Canada?
There are a lot of worthy causes reaching out for our dollars today, and that’s why we’re confident that by setting a recommended donation amount of just $1, everyone can contribute and this campaign will not erode any other local or national needs. But this initiative goes well beyond local fundraising. Prejudice is a global humanitarian issue that needs as much attention as it can receive. All funds directly support the Foundation’s Perpetual Fund at Auschwitz and to preserving the camp. The Nazis tried to cover up what happened at Auschwitz, and destroy much of the evidence of mass extermination. Restoration has made it possible for visitors to witness the site and absorb what Auschwitz can teach us. If future generations can see, touch, and be affected by Auschwitz, it offers them a much better chance at understanding the results of intolerance and hatred, and preventing similar events from ever happening again.
Why do you think this campaign will be successful?
While there is a fair degree of global support for Holocaust remembrance, for the first time in the years since WWII, it is possible to create a campaign like this, through the advent of social media and micropayments through PayPal. We have a great opportunity for 5 generations of Canadians to show the world that ‘we remember’. We think the simple $1 gesture should be appealing enough to rally regular people from coast to coast.
